Hand painted with oil and dry pigments on deer skin.  This painting is the story of NC Indians. The bird is a parott called the NC Parott. It is an extinct bird that was very colorful and was used by Europeans for decorations on hats and such. The bird was killed off to extinction just as the Natives were destined to be but have survived. Legend has it that the bird still exist deep within the state as the Natives still do. Each parott representas a Tribe in NC - 8 total.  Each spearhead (diamond shape) represents the 100 counties in which the natives live in.  Each arrowhead represents the 7 State Recognized Tribes and the half circles represent the Cherokee (a Federally Recognized Tribe)
